FYI Tips for Facebook Fan Pages – How 2-B Sure Your 'LIKES' Count!

A growing number of etsy members are supporting and promoting fellow members, by "liking" each other's facebook fan pages. This has lead to a lot of frustration regarding how facebook's fan system works; in particular-- when and how page "likes" are tallied on the counter. Many page owners are left confused after they are notified within a post that they have been “liked”, but notice their fan counter hasn’t increased. My goal for this post is to help clear things up. :)

First, as a new visitor with the intention of fanning a business page, you need to always be viewing and "liking" the page you are visiting from your personal facebook page (the one with your real name), for it to actually "count".

“Liking” a fan page from your own fan page does NOT increase the "like" counter located on the fan pages.

You could "like" with both of your pages if you want; but, only pressing the “like” button when viewing directly from your personal page will change the counter. If you’ve been “liking” business fan pages from your own business fan page all along, you can go back to the same business fan pages and “like” again from your personal page, and it will “count” this time.

In addition, if you'd like the owner to pay a visit to your page in return, you should post some evidence of it on the wall of the page you are “liking”. Otherwise, the owner may not be willing to take the time to figure out which facebook fan page is yours, or even be able to, since you are fanning from your personal page.

So, the next thing you will want to consider, is if and how, you will leave your trail. It is important to keep in mind that some page owners prefer a cleaner page look; without your business photos on it. Although facebook business pages do have setting options, to allow or not allow visitors to post links, there is still no guarantee the page owner will keep your post on their fan page after it is posted. That is up to each administrator’s discretion.

A favorable, alternative option to the large photo link, is to create a discrete, clickable blue business tag by typing...

@your business name

....anywhere within your message.

This is an especially nice choice for posting on clean-kept walls, or on those that do not have the photo link option available.

In any case, you should always take a moment to view the page before posting, to "feel out" what the page owner prefers; then use your discretion as to which way is best for you to post.

When you are visiting in return, it's not as important, but still a nice courtesy to indicate if you are returning the gesture from your (name/shop). This way, the page owner realizes they’ve already visited your page, and that you have taken the time to visit and fan theirs.

Creating Facebook Fan and Non-fan Content

Would you like to have one of those special facebook landing pages that magically changes when someone “likes” you? Maybe you have special codes, discount offers or content which you would like to share with fans only. On my facebook page, I have a coupon which is only revealed to fans. Here is a basic tutorial to help you easily create a page which shows hidden content to your fans only. :)

First you will need to install a static html iframes tab:

Click on “Edit page” in the top right hand corner of the wall on your facebook fan page.

Click on “apps” on left hand side (4^th tab from bottom).

Click on “browse for more applications”.

Type in “static html iframe”.

I, personally, use the application with the STAR. It’s very simple to use, and this is the one I will describe:

Click on the star to open up the application. Then to install it on your page, click on “add to my page” from your side bar. You will be directed to choose which of your pages to add to; choose your fan page if that is where you want it. Then close.

Now, head back to your fan page. Scroll down and you will see the star with “welcome” in your left sidebar.

Click on the “welcome” tab. You will now see two boxes; one for non-fans, and the second for fans. You will put html coding, called “script,” into each of these boxes. Html code is the language which is used for programming websites. Anything you want to show on your pages-- text, photos, images, etc-- must be described within html coding.

Currently, I have text only on my own non-fan and fan pages, because this is all I would like right now; however, if you want to use photos or images for your own page, you will first have to store those images on a server like flickr or photobucket, or within a folder on your website, if you have one. You would then include your image address(es) within your html coding.

If you are familiar with html, go ahead and type your code within the iframe boxes. If you are not familiar with html code, you can view one of the many helpful tutorials online, use an online code generator, or use a web page creator program.

If you are looking for something less time consuming, an online code generator would probably be the best choice; these create basic code templates which you can copy and paste directly into the iframe application boxes. A very easy online html code generator is available at: http://www.html.am/. You simply design what you want your page to look like, as if you are typing into a word processor. When you are finished, press “source” in the top left corner, and the html code will appear in the box. Copy and paste the entire script into the desired iframe box on your facebook page; save it by clicking on the “save and view tab”. You need to create one script for each of the iframe boxes; one you design for non-fan viewing, and the other for fan viewing.

If you’d like to try some html on your own, a nice web html tutorial is located at http://www.quackit.com/ . The basics are relatively easy to learn for most people in one sitting.

When you are finished adding and saving your html code into each of your iframe boxes, you could choose to view what your page looks like from each perspective-- non fan, and fan. If you decide to make changes, be sure to keep saving so your most recent script is not lost by accident.

Perhaps you would like the page you created to be your default landing page-- the page the users first see when they come to your fan page. Click on “edit page”, then choose “manage permissions”. There, you are able to select the “welcome” page as your new default landing page.

In addition, you may prefer your new tab to read something other than “welcome”; eg. My tab reads “coupon”. To change the tab from “welcome” to something else, click “edit page”, then “apps”, and scroll down to the “static html iframes tab”… click on “edit settings” underneath; it is in blue. Here, you are able to rename the tab whatever you want.

Voilà! Now your facebook fan page will have a special page that only fans, who “like” you, can view!
